– Michael Kohler (KSTA, Kultur)

A replica waiting room with grey seats, magazines, a TV screen and a snack vending machine, however, not salty biscuits and sweets can be drawn, but self-defence weapons for women. At the push of a button and after inserting money, irritant gas pistols, stun guns or alarm lipsticks fall into the machine shaft, each as commercially available original goods in girly pink. On the TV screen on the wall, pictures from Google Street View pass by showing Colognes “dumping grounds” of women drugged and abused with knockout drops. On the soundtrack, bureaucratic and thoroughly helpless-sounding tips from the police, on how women should protect themselves from such assaults, can be heard. Video work as reconstruction. Google Street View is not only a daily orientation aid, already used in dementia therapy as a memory stimulant. At the documented locations in Cologne, original ambient sounds were recorded via field recorders. The title is derived from a quote by Hegel. “The difference between man and woman is the same as that between animal and plant. The animal corresponds more closely to the character of the man, the plant to that of the woman.” – G.W.F. Hegel: Philosophy of Right, 1896, p. 172 (paragraph 166), London.
